I believe I went with 1 3/4" screws to be safe because I was sick of them breaking.

Because of that I purchased a couple galvanized washers (two sizes to stair step so one larger and one smaller) to install along with the tapcon. Also know that the heads of the tapcon fasteners are NOT big enough and they will go right through the premade holes in the brackets. So the minimum is 1" but the max is 1 3/4".
I sheared off 8 of them before I got pissed and did a couple hours of research. One thing that the tapcon install guide doesn't tell you is that they are not made to go further than 1 3/4" into the concrete so if you are thinking of going longer to be better, don't.
